The Name of the Lord II

The Name of the Lord II

 Proverbs 18:10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.

In the first part of this excerpt, we looked into the name of the Lord being Jesus and the Word of God. We also saw that a tower is taller than surrounding buildings and that elevated nature of the tower give us reason to run to it for safety.

In this part we would be looking  at the final aspect of this verse of scripture which says, “The righteous run to it and are safe.” Who is the righteous? In understanding the righteous, there are two dimensions;

The nature of the righteous and the action/lifestyle of the righteous.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake, He made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. This is the nature of righteousness we receive once we accept Christ as Lord.

Then there is a practice of righteousness that suggests that now that we have been made righteous, let us walk in a way that does not contradict that nature.

1 John 3:7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as He is righteous. 1 John 2:29 If you know that He is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him. Both scriptures are showing us that the one who has received that gift of righteousness must live in a way that is consistent or in alignment with what they received. The one who received righteousness can’t do just anything because it’s a gift. The gift must be well stewarded/ taken care of so the person sees the fruits of righteousness evident in their life. This is because a person can be righteous based on what Christ did for them but be living in opposition to the very will of God for them.

A person who runs to the tower (Word or Jesus) must be in subjection to the Lord. He first believes in the tower’s provision of safety and that’s what took him there. The one who doesn’t believe won’t even put an effort into running to the tower. In this verse you see the word ‘run’. This shows an active involvement of the person. So even with the gift of righteousness, there must be an active decision to live/practice righteousness.

This was why Jesus died based on 2 Peter 2:24a He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. The Bible mentions that the just (righteous) shall live by faith and it’s this same faith the Bible says that if without works, is dead. So there’s the believing part and the living part.

2 Tim. 2:19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

The righteous run to it and *are safe.*  That word safe is tied to safety, salvation, deliverance, peace.  This means in the tower, in the Word of God and in Jesus, we are safe. God’s Word provides boundaries that keep us safe as long as we don’t overstep those boundaries. His principles are meant to save us from the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. That armor is the Word. We’d break that down in the next excerpt. Proverbs 1:33  But whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster. Safety comes from obeying the Word. Proverbs 11:14 Where there is no guidance, a people fall, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. The counsel from His Word gives safety. In Acts 4:12, we also see that in a name we are saved. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

Even though this was a scripture in the old testament, everything about it was pointing to Jesus coming to be our salvation and how we needed to walk/live after we accept the gift of righteousness He paid for.

Jesus is that tower, highly elevated, who we run to(involves our participation even though He initiated) and once we take that action/step of faith(running), we are safe (salvation).

This is a brief breakdown into the famous verse and I believe that as you meditate the more, the Lord will give you even more insights.
