The Feet

The Feet

Psalm 40:2 ESV He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

It’s amazing how our feet mean a lot in the Bible. As I meditated on scriptures that had to do with feet, I was in awe of the kind of message it held. Anytime scripture describes living in a certain way or behaving in a manner, usually, we see the word, “Walk”. Interestingly, it’s our feet we use to walk. For instance, there are scriptures like Walk in the Spirit, walk by faith and not by sight, walk not in the counsel of the wicked, walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, walk in love, walk in the light, and I can go on and on but all these expressions are just saying one thing. Live this way, do this /that thing. So now I discover that everything we do on this earth in preparation for eternity is actually a walk.

Life is a journey and guess what? We are using our feet as the means of transportation from one point to the other.

Looking at this topic of feet, we would have to start from where it all began. The first man and woman. In Genesis 3:15, we see that God made a statement after the fall of man: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. The word in bold is the emphasis here. The heel is the hind part of the foot. If the head of the serpent was mentioned in conjunction with the heel of man, it sends a message. If not why wasn’t another body part mentioned with the head of the serpent? While the devil is targeting our feet, our target is his head. This means the head of the enemy and the foot of man have a similar function. When trying to disarm a serpent, the part to focus on is the head because that is where it can cause harm from. We can therefore deduce that the power of man is in his feet. If not why is our feet the enemy’s target? Let’s explain further.

When the scripture mentions foothold, it basically denotes dominion, influence, power, and rulership. The ability to be in charge of a territory. This shows that feet are what give a person dominance. The serpent used to have feet. Science has shown evidence of the evolution of the bodies of snakes, that they previously had legs. The dominion of the serpent was affected as a result of that declaration so his target is now the feet/heel of the ones God blessed and told to be fruitful and have dominion over the fish, birds and all creeping things. He’s after our feet because he lost his feet. Everything the devil is doing in the world today is possible because he has borrowed feet of men to accomplish his evil schemes. Man has given him that power and influence.

Given all this, God has always had a plan for our feet. The writer in the opening scripture establishes that God set his feet upon the rock and made his steps secure. Why this? The famous Psalm 91:11-12 says For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands, they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. Psalm 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delights in his way. The good man here is the righteous man, the one who has received His life. This means once a person accepts the Lord, the first thing the Lord begins working on are your steps, your walking – in other words, how you do things and live your life. Isaiah 52:7 How beautiful are the feet of him who brings good news and a part of the armor of God is your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Ephesians 6:15. So while God wants to use your feet for the gospel of salvation to save others and reconcile them to Himself, the devil is also looking for feet to do his bidding. No wonder Psalm119:105 says Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. I was thinking it should say a lamp for my eyes to see properly but apparently the lamp is meant for the feet so that it won’t be dashed against a stone. In other words, God’s Word is the tool to guide my feet into His will for me.

Finally, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper not necessarily for it to be a ritual we perform but it was symbolic of their walk when the Master left. He was in effect washing their feet of any impurity that would limit the effectiveness of their walk with the One who was going to be their Helper – the Holy Spirit. Their feet were going to do most of the work so he had to cleanse it for service.
