The Way, the Truth and the Life

The Way, the Truth and the Life

John 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me.

The concept of the way, the truth and the life is representative of three phases in our journey with God. The end goal of our journey with God is to express His life. Jesus said in John 10:10 that, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. So this is the entire essence of Jesus’ coming on the earth. Sin brought death which is separation from the life of God. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. So in this scripture we see another emphasis on eternal life through Christ that is meant to substitute the death we deserved as a result of sin. This confirms that the end goal of the journey with God is to partake of his life and nature. 2 Peter 1:4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Having established this foundation, the three phases of our walk with God are Way, Truth, and Life. We have seen that Life is the end goal so now let’s start from the beginning which would lead us to that Life.

The first point is the Way. A way is a route, direction, or path to a destination. So in the opening scripture, we see that the path, route, and direction to Life is Jesus. Proverbs 12:28 In the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality. This means your end will be determined by which way you use or the path you take. In other words, once I miss the way, the destination I get to would be wrong. Comparing Isaiah 35:8 which says, And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. and Mathew 7:14 which says,  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. We see that ways are designed for a specific type of people. If you aren’t a certain kind of person, there are ways you can’t use.

This means a way restricts your options. You either choose that way or nothing else.

So then Deuteronomy 30:19 says, This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live. The instruction here is Choose Life.

The second phase is the Truth. The truth refers to the principles that guide a way. After you find the way, who is Jesus – the path to God, the next phase is coming to the knowledge of the Truth. What must I do now with the new way I have found and how do I get the best from this way? That’s the question of the Truth. Jesus said in John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. This means the Holy Spirit came to reveal to us who God is. Knowing the way isn’t all there is, we must now know the Truth because the devil’s main tool is deception. 1Timothy 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. So when men know the way, they are saved but after that they must concretize the belief they have by knowing the truth. Psalm 86:11 Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

This means before I can walk in the truth, I must know the way.

In all these three phases: The Way, The Truth, and The Life. There is one tool that gives us insight into them. The tool is the Word. By the Word, we know the Way. Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

By the Word, we know the Truth. Psalm 119:160 The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.

And finally, by the Word, we know the Life. John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

The Word guides people to the way, teaches the truth, and imparts life. Thus, the Word is essential for navigating all three phases of the spiritual journey.
