Matthew 9:17 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wineskins so that both are preserved.
It’s a new year!!! And guess what there was really nothing different from both years except the number change. It was literally just like another new day. Many times people get the idea of a new year just based on a feeling or sometimes the atmosphere just feels new but in reality, no difference. It’s just a psychological wiring that makes it ‘feel’ different. If you continue doing what you were doing the previous year, the same results would be produced.
The only time the new year would be new in manifestation is when you do something different.
From the opening scripture, we see that old wine is not to be put in new wineskin. The question is; What is a wineskin? A wineskin is an ancient type of container that is used to store and transport wine. There are two words worthy of notice here. Store and Transport. The word ‘store’ gives the idea of contain, keep, reserve, save, set aside. The word transport connotes transfer, move, transmit, convey, carry. New wine is meant to be stored and then transported. This means for everything the Lord gives and every feat we achieve or attain, there is a part of that thing we store and another part we transport. Let’s break it down.
To store something, you need room or space. This is what we call capacity. To house something new, there is a kind of person you need to be. This explains the new wineskin concept.
If you aren’t a kind of person, don’t expect the kind of results that particular person produces.
A wineskin is a container, so you need to be a certain kind of container to house some things. For instance, a 16-pound bottle doesn’t have the capacity, space or room to store what a dispenser bottle can contain.
The second aspect is transport. This means for anything you achieve or attain, there is a part that must be transmitted. There is a part of your results that is meant to help others and contribute to making their lives better. You are meant to be a conduit through whom others can be blessed. But you can only transfer to others what you have. If you don’t have it, you can’t give it. But to have, you must be a certain kind of person.
Change or transformation is first internal before the external shows. This new year would be real in experience to you if, and only if, you become a different kind of person. You don’t expect to do great things, if you are not first a great person. And ‘What is the routine of a great person?’ is what you should find out. The change must happen first in your person before it becomes your reality.
Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. Take note of the boldened phrases. First build you up before give you. This suggests that anytime God has anything for a person, what He does first is build them up into the kind of person who can handle that which he has prepared for them. Daniel 11:32b but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. This scripture also says to do exploits, there is a kind of person you should be. You must be a person who knows their God. So I must first be strong before I can do exploits because exploits aren’t for weak people. Again, in John 3:1-3, Nicodemus was asking Jesus what he should do to inherit the Kingdom and Jesus told him that to inherit the Kingdom, he must first be born again. In essence, be a kind of person before you do some things.
Because some people are usually not capacitated for what they have, they literally burst like the old wine that was put in the new wineskin. That good thing they attained ends up destroying their lives. So, a new year is time to make sure you are a container that can store and transport what God has for you by submitting yourself to the building process of the Lord.
