Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
As we grow in our relationship with God, it is expected that our prayers are improved and we focus on the most important things while we pray.
In this excerpt, I would want to share, using scriptures, prayers worth emphasizing on, as we grow in Christ.
In the opening scripture, we can see three levels of prayer: Asking, Seeking, and Knocking. Asking is the lowest level of prayer. God wants us to move from asking to seeking and then knocking.
A lot of people are always asking God for things but they do not want to seek Him to get to know Him. We want the things He has to offer but not Him. There’s a line to a song that says, “Give me you. Everything else can wait.”
What a lot of people miss out on is the fact that the more of God you have in you, the easier you get access to the other things many are looking for. Matthew 6:33 puts it perfectly well. But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you.
Psalm 37:4 also says, Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. 1 Chronicles 16:11 Seek the Lord and His strength; seek his presence continually! God’s presence is more important than the car and money you’re praying for. Do you know why? When God is with you, you prosper.
Genesis 39:2 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. That’s why David said in Psalm 51:1 Cast me not away from your presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me. In effect, David was trying to say that God could take whatever he(David) had but His(God’s) presence because David knew that even if he lost his wealth, family and any other thing, God’s presence would bring them back.
Throughout the letters the Apostle Paul wrote to the churches, he prayed key prayers for them. An example is in Ephesians 1:17-18 “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.” And then verse 18 says that the eyes of your understanding be enlightened…
Another prayer worthy of notice is in Colossians 1:9-10. He prayed for God to fill them with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding His Spirit gives so that they may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God. He prayed this because He knew that if they pleased God and their lives honored Him, what they desire would be granted.
In 2 Kings 20:2-3, when you read carefully, Hezekiah never prayed to God for extra years to live after the prophet told him he was going to die. All he did was to list all he had done for God and His Kingdom but God answered that with 15 more years. There’s a level you get to in God where your service and sacrifices speak for you. Pray the most important prayers. These prayers cover a lot of other things we may not even ask for.
All these prayers I’ve talked about have scriptural backing and praying the Word is the best way to pray.
